Photography One of the pictures I took at the Apple Store in Boston two weeks ago, released under Creative Commons license on Flickr, has been reused by ifoAppleStore (just look at the bottom of the page). It pretty nice to see that CC works ! I mean, I like to take pictures and I know I can’t make any money of this, but it’s cool to have some recognition with a little tag at the bottom of the photo stating “francois @ edito.qc.ca”. This page was featured in a BusinessWeek article also. That shows how Flickr tags work pretty well (As of Jan. 2th, it appears I’m the only one that posted a photo with the “ipodexpress” tag).

Entre 1909 et 1915, Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii parcouru l’Empire russe pour créer une considérable collection de photographies couleurs. Il avait eu la bénédiction du Tsar Nicholas II qui lui avait attribué une voiture de train transformée en chambre noire pour transporter son équipement. Sergei fut le premier photographe a utilisé à grande échelle la première technique de photographies couleurs. Cette collection avait été oubliée depuis longtemps, car il utilisait des plaques photographiques et n’avait aucun moyen de les imprimer sur papier à l’époque. En effet, il utilisait une plaque pour capturer la partie rouge, bleue et verte du spectre. En 2001, la Librarie du congrès, qui avait achetée les plaques en 1948, a démarré un projet de numérisation des plaques. On peut aujourd’hui apprécier cette magnifique collection de photographies couleurs de la Russie du début du 20e siècle.

Photography Voilà un petit jeu tout simple et amusant dans lequel on vous présente une photo prise par un de vos contacts sur Flickr et vous devez choisir entre trois possibilités. Bonne façon de revoir de belles photos que l’on a pas vu depuis longtemps. Aussi, on devient assez bon après un moment pour reconnaître le style artistique de chaque personne.

Photography Ce matin j’avais envie de me changer les idées, après un bon café, caméra photo au cou, je suis parti prendre quelques photos pour rendre hommage à la nature en cet automne. C’est bon de renouer avec la nature pour un moment en se baladant seul dans les boisés du Mont Royal.

Travels Ouf… Ce court voyage m’a permis de changer les idées, mais j’ai les pieds en compote. J’ai beaucoup marché, je n’ai peut-être pas pris autant de photos que j’aurais aimé au cours de ces quatre jours… Il faut avouer que le temps était particulièrement maussade lundi et mardi. L’auberge de jeunesse était vraiment très bien et j’ai enfin pu rencontrer mes amis de NYC Wireless. Je vais laisse apprécier les photos que j’ai mis sur Flickr. Bref, j’ai beaucoup marché, j’ai employé abondemment le réseau de métro et j’ai vu un tas de choses intéressantes. Vivement quelques jours de repos avant le retour à l’université…

Techno After finishing some more antenna installs on saturday with Mike, Benoit and Bruno, I talked with Mike about integrating Flickr into Ile Sans Fil’s portal pages. Friday night I wrote a few PHP lines as proof of concept. I managed to extract photos from Flickr based on certains tags and display them in a webpage. I have to say that Flickr’s REST XML API is awesome ! It’s a programmer’s dream, very flexible, straight-forward and damn fast.
I plan to put up a working demo by next ISF meeting, which is in a week and half. What’s even better is that I might write this demo on my work hours 
My boss really wants the demo to promote our new art distribution system. It’s a really motivating project, exactly the kind of stuff that thrives me. Even better, I’m gonna have so much fun contributing to the project by taking snaps of the city.

Photography Here’s another nice example of what you can do with Flickr’s API. Mappr! is a Flash-based creation that generates a map of the USA with Flickr photos based on location-metadatas.

Photography Le voilà, le best-of des deux dernières années en photos. Merci à Antoine pour l’idée ! Je suis vraiment satisfait du résultat. Je cherchais justement un nouveau poster pour mettre un peu de couleur dans ma chambre.
